Black History Month Fact(ish-like thing) #7
The First Black Shakespearean Method Actor
July, 1971. Roger Tuggle became the first black Shakespearean method actor when, after being arrested during a pronounced fight with a white prostitute outside the C&S Lounge, told the police that he was not fighting with the woman, but was in fact researching a role he was auditioning for at a nearby halfway house’s production of “Othello”. Two months later Tuggle did in fact star and direct a penitentiary presentation of “Orange Juice and Wave Cap Dreams” to riotous brickyard acclaim.
